Special cleaners will do 99% of the work for you
They will remove grease, dirt and other deposits from inside the machine. They will clean the filter, spray arms, nozzles and pipes that you would not otherwise reach.
3 basic types of cleaners:
- Regeneration salts - Remove calcium deposits and return the original performance. Put the salt regularly into the reservoir, about once every six months. The dishwasher controls the dosage itself according to the water hardness setting.
- "3 in 1" tablets - reduce calcium deposits, prevent it from settling, clean grease and remove odor. They are used once a month in an empty machine running on a regular cycle.
- Powder removers of grease and calcium deposits - remove deposits, maintain performance and extend the life of the appliance. The frequency of use depends on the hardness of the water and on the frequency of washing your dishes.
Manually, just wash the dishwasher door and clean the sealing rubber. To do this, you will need a wet cloth with a normal detergent.
4 The best home-made dishwasher cleaners
Don’t have any special cleaners on hand? Use commonly available helpers:
a. Baking soda
Soda will be great for cleaning dirty dishwashers mildly and moderately. Put 2 soda bags into the bottom of your dishwasher and turn on the energy saving program. A clean and shiny interior without stains and odors awaits you.
Do you want to remove calcium deposits, get rid of bad odors and polish the surface of the dishwasher? Pour approximately 1 l of vinegar into the container for detergent gel and also in the bottom of the dishwasher and turn on the program to the highest temperature. Wash baskets or the filter in vinegar water. As for the filter, it is enough to wash it in clean water.
TIP: Give your dishwasher this vinegar bath every 3 months.
c. Citric acid
It works just like vinegar. Pour 100-200 g of powder into the tray or the bottom of the dishwasher and turn the program on at a high temperature. Citric acid perfectly cleans pipes and other components otherwise inaccessible.
d. Lemon juice
Lemon brings the same benefits as vinegar, soda and citric acid – it cleans pipes, nozzles and the glossy interior of the appliance as well as removing odors. As a bonus, the dishwasher will smell nice. Put half a lemon into the cutlery tray and turn on the normal dishwashing.
3 important steps in preventing dishwasher defects
1. Dishes without residues
Never place dishes with food residues. All dirt is trapped in the filter and nozzles. They prevent the proper drainage of water and cause an unpleasant odor. Especially dangerous are the residues of acidic foods. They cause the corrosion of components when they react with water.
2. Water softeners
If you have hard water in your home, there is a risk of calcium deposits on the heater, drum, pipe, pump and other key components. Invest in a water softener or magnetic scale remover. Simply install it on the supply hose. It prevents the formation of dirty coating on the dishes and clogging the dishwasher.
3. Professional service
If there is an unpleasant odor and the dishes are not properly washed even after cleaning, contact an expert. The service technician will look into the bottom under the filter, where you will not get yourself. Underneath the filter, food residues can be trapped causing a strong odor and are subject to further problems.
