How to defrost your fridge

Defrosting one’s fridge is not one of the most popular activities. Yet it is nec-essary to do it from time to time. Both your appliance and your wallet will be grateful for it.

When should you defrost?

Manual defrosting should be carried out when the ice deposited exceeds 0.5 cm. The ice should not exceed 1 centimetre, because then the overall consumption of the fridge increases by up to 75 %. If you want to save energy, do not put off defrosting unnecessarily.

How to do it step by step

If you follow these easy instructions, you will manage the entire defrosting, including cleaning, within 1 hour.

1. Unplug the fridge

For safety reasons, do not switch the fridge off only on the control panel. To be sure, unplug the appliance completely. Then you can take out all the food and store it in a cool place – for example in a cellar, corridor, behind the window or on the balcony.

2. Speed up the process

If you want to finish your work faster, put a pot of hot water inside the empty fridge. However, never spread the interior of the appliance with it – the surface could crack due to thermal shock. You can carefully peel off the thicker layers of the ice using a plastic peeler. However, be sure not to use sharp objects. During defrosting keep the appliance door open and do not forget to place towels, cloths or any other textile to capture the flowing water underneath.   

3. Start cleaning

Wash the fridge interior, wipe shelves and slide-in boxes with water mixed with dish washing liquid or you can use a special cleasing spray. Do not forget to wash rubber seals too and make sure they fit tightly and do not need to be replaced. Unless you have used a special spray, wipe the fridge interior with a cloth soaked in vinegar water. Vinegar can absorb odour and also has disinfectant properties. In the end, dry everything carefully. Otherwise the remaining water could create a new ice crust and you would have to repeat the process.

4. Switch on the fridge again

Now you can plug the appliance in again. Set the required cooling temperature and wait if everything works as it is supposed to. After 30 minutes you can fill the fridge with food again.

TIP: Have you got an American style fridge freezer at home? The replaceable filter insert cleans the water in the ice maker. This way it protects not only the lifespan of the maker, but it also removes the water odour and removes that unpleasant chlorine taste.

Automatic defrosting saves your time and effort

Do you want to avoid manual defrosting? Modern fridges offer various functions of automatic defrosting. However, not all of them will free you of the ice completely. The ideal solution is to choose a fridge with a No Frost function. Such appliances operate on the principle of cooling by means of cold air circulating inside constantly. The humidity exits by itself. Thanks to it, ice is not created at all and its removal is thus completely eliminated.

TIP: The replaceable antibacterial filter removes bacteria and odour from the fridge, thus protecting your food.  Even better is to buy a fridge with an antibacterial inner surface.

Other tips for a clean fridge and economical operation

These 6 simple principles provide you with significant savings on fridge operation:

1. Keep your fridge full with just enough

Do not fill your fridge with food too much but do not keep it half-empty either. Only in this case can it perform optimally.

2. Close the door

Never leave your fridge door open for too long. Doing so increases the volume of electricity consumed and your wallet will suffer.

3. Keep it clean

Wash your fridge with clean water once in a while. If necessary, you can add soda or vinegar. It can remove bacteria as well as unpleasant odour. This can be removed also with special odour absorbers. Do not forget to clean the compressor and condenser at the back of the fridge. They should be dusted once every 3 months.

4. Set the correct temperature

The ideal temperature inside the fridge is between 0–5 degrees Celsius.

5. Pay attention to tidiness

Store the food preferably in closed containers or bags. This prevents odour and bacteria multiplication.

6. Let your food cool down first

Hot food should not be in the fridge. It can only increase the temperature inside the appliance and cause the creation of unwanted ice. Always let the food cool down completely before storing.

Remember that for durability and the nice aroma of your food it is important that things be properly organized in the fridge.
